Tucked away in the Upper Town of Zagreb, The Museum of Broken Relationships stands as a self-proclaimed sanctuary for the broken-hearted.

An endearing collection of once-adored objects and discarded items make up the space, alongside a message composed by the individual behind each donation.

From old shoes and bikes to a twenty-seven-year-old scab, articles vary in size, shape and form, as well as eccentricity.

Messages, too, differ in length, with some lasting only a few short lines. Meanwhile, others carry on for several blocks or columns, with a very intentional beginning, middle and end.

Some are quirky. Some are lame. Some are downright heartbreaking. Take the mannequinned wedding dress in the centre of the exhibition, for instance.

The story behind this artefact ends with one lover’s death in a terror attack before the wedding could take place.

One can’t even begin to imagine the pain behind such a loss. One can only embrace the garment, and hope its old owner is doing well.

That’s probably the most important thing to remember about this exhibition, that at the end of the day, these are all real people.

These are real experiences, with many memories and emotions enthralled within each piece, hence why it’s important to approach with an open mind.

Certain scripts may feel relatable. Some sentimental letters may put you off, but there is definitely something to learn within each tale of woe.

Every narrative is a snippet into fresh human perspectives. The voices carry pain, but they also carry counsel. Some are super lighthearted, while some are clearly still bitter.

Nevertheless, they go hand in hand with the actual tokens of affection laid out before you, so it can definitely be a vivid viewer experience.

It’s also important to note that the relationships being shared are not always romantic.

From family fueds to friendships turned sour, these are just some examples of the many situations and broken relationships on display.

The internationally crowd-sourced project even opened an additional venue in LA in 2016, such is its success as a creative institution.

Aside from these permanent outposts, the travelling collection has been presented in almost 60 exhibitions around the world.

Boasting much originality, variety and amusement, the museum exhibition is not to be missed when in Zagreb or LA.
